Daily Doses: Emily Reo “On The Beach” (Neil Young Cover) Single (2010)
I’m drowning in Reo.
Having received a lovely e-mail from the enchanting Ms. Reo yesterday, informing me that FMLY was giving free digital downloads of her 2009 debut Minha Gatinha (as well as her 2010 follow up Witch Mtn), I took immediate advantage of that situation, and have listened to little else since.
While both albums rely heavily on Reo’s voice, the difference between the albums is night and day. Each fitting two completely different moods like a glove.
Minha Gatinha, finds a slightly more vulnerable Reo. Coated in warmth, the tracks steam out between the floor board cracks. Filling the house with doubled and tripled vocal layers that swirl about like a sauna. Though haunted by Reo’s ghostly echoes, It’s both captivating and inviting. A siren calling from the rocks.
Witch Mtn, on the other hand, is a freezing breeze that catches you unaware. Reo’s voice drops any pretense at invitation and instead crawls across your spine and through your body, traveling along it’s pathways until it drags through your lungs and exits in a crystalline fog. Taking just a little bit of you with it. That’s not to say there’s no warmth at all in the tracks, it’s just the warmth you feel right before freezing to death.
Both having been out for a while, chopping them up for parts seems a too disrespectful. But I strongly urge you to grab them both here.
The cover above is Reo’s most recent single. Managing to capture something from both of her earlier releases. It’s warm and distant at the same time, a unique looks at one of Young’s classics, as well as a great example of the sound of things to come in the very near future.
Daily Doses: Teen Daze “Let’s Fall Asleep Together” From Beach Dreams (2010)
Things change far more often than things stay the same.
Those of you not familiar with some of Teen Daze’s side projects may consider this a big switch from the ambient, beach driven aesthetic that have made up the majority of his body of work.
However, hints of this album can be seen peaking through the cracks of some of his other works including the guitar work on his Two Bicyles recordings.
Not sure if “Let’s Fall Asleep Together”, which opens up the just released Beach Dreams, indicates a permanent change in style for Teen Daze. If it does though, two things to consider.
1.we’ll always have Four More Years, which captured the sound we’ve known Teen Daze for up to point perfectly.
2. Context aside, and ignoring whether these beach pop jams are the sound of the future or just a temporary diversion, they’re really damn good.
This E.P. was done in support of Teen Daze’s Upcoming Tour with MillionYoung, Here are those dates:

I had a terrible dream last night that I missed a Gobble Gobble show, and when I called Cecil to ask him why he didn’t tell me they were coming to town, he said that he had, but that I claimed that I “had too much school work.” I woke up kind of bummed at the thought of missing that show and at the fact that I have a physics project to do, but then I checked my email and found a message from Cecil, reading:
“I’ve capitulated to the gods of thanksgiving. In their honor and yrs.”
Following the message was this brilliant cover of The-Dream’s “Nikki,” bursting with seemingly unworldly sounds and energy, as usual. So, if you also succumbed to the endless indulgences of Thanksgiving, this one can surely pull you back to consciousness.
Finally, my favorite Swedes are back, and they certainly didn’t lose their ability to transform R&B bangers into lush, balearic soundscapes. “Let Them” samples Akon classic “Right Now,” and right now, it’s making me feel great. Swedish label Sincerely Yours dropped the new track today along with the xx “Intro”-sampling “I’m the One/Money On My Mind.” Download both here, or below. I’ve missed these guys greatly. Today is a good day.
